We started our two week Namibia Roadtrip in Namibia’s Capital Windhoek and finished there as well.  Before arriving back at Windhoek we had a one night stay at Fish River Canyon where we saw an amazing sunset.  The pictures of Fish River Canyon speak for themselves.  We were sad to leave Namibia.  When we started our Shabbatical it wasn’t a place on the top of our travel list, but it might be the place we remember the most.  WE MISS YOU NAMIBIA!!!

Windhoek

If you travel to Namibia by plane, you will most likely fly both in and out of Windhoek. It’s a good home base for renting your car.  Windhoek is also a safe city and is between Sousevlei and Etosha, but that’s about it. We don’t believe there is any reason to stay in Windhoek more than you absolutely need to. We came to Windhoek our first and last night in Namibia and that was enough.

Most notable on the route between Fish River Canyon and Windhoek is the Tropic of a Capricorn:

Fish River Canyon

If you’re travelling to Fish River Canyon we recommend staying at the NWR campground/Lodge there. You can reserve in advance, your choice of campsite is first come first serve.

Fish River Canyon is the largest Canyon in Africa and is an incredible site at sunset. The main lookout point has a view of a 360 degree bend in the river forming the canyon.  This lookout is very similar to the Fish River Bend in northern Arizona. There is a 5 day hike as well as shorter hikes in Fish River Canyon, however hiking is only allowed in the canyon during the colder months of May to Mid-September . For those people pressed on time and not traveling to Luderitz, we would recommend passing on Fish River Canyon.  Fish River Canyon is out of the way from most sites in Namibia, about 8 hours from Windhoek.

But we did have a great sunset dinner and sunrise breakfast by the canyon:
